Naomi Cayne

 

                                   

        Naomi Cayne, born and raised in central New Jersey, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University.  She began as a painter, later incorporating textile works as a return to and even subversion of "feminine" crafts.  She went on to pursue a Master of Arts in Art History and Fine Arts Administration from Temple University.  Her Master's Thesis is entitled "Sex, Power, and the Stitch: The Contemporary Feminist Embroidery of Ghada Amer."  She lives and works in northern Virginia with her husband and two cats.

        "I am interested in the attractive physicality of my materials; I strive to create works of flatness and depth, line and color.  The animals and objects of my embroideries and softies seem to have character and charm.  Other works pay homage to innovators whom I admire.  My paintings express conscious and subconscious feelings through aesthetic choices.  In all of the pieces, aspects of my personality are revealed through symbolic imagery."
